Adnams is the first drinks company to use the new social networking craze, Twitter. It says take-up among beer fans has exceeded all expectations.

"We've only been doing it a few weeks but it's going well," said Emma Hibbert of Adnams. "As soon as we launched it on the Twitter site, we had 50 people sign up within the hour."

Although not confirmed, it's believed John Cleese and Stephen Fry have both signed up to the Adnams Twitter site.

For those yet to discover it, Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them.

Users can send and receive updates via the Twitter website, SMS, RSS (receive only), or through applications such as Tweetie, Twitterrific, and Feedalizr.
