313 Drinking Banning Orders issued, confirms Home Office

Report: Home Office issues drinking banning orders stats

The Home Office has reported that 313 Drinking Banning Orders (DBOs) have been issued on conviction since the facility became available to local authorities last year.

A DBO is a specific order from a civil court imposed on an individual who has behaved in a disorderly manner or who has committed a criminal offence while under the influence of alcohol.

DBOs have been available nationally since 31 August 2009. They can be put in place to stop an individual from entering premises that sell alcohol or ban them from entering pubs in a specific area.

In April 2010, 25 Local Justice Areas were required to consider issuing a DBO to offenders on conviction. This provision was rolled out to a further 25 Local Justice Areas in July 2010. The Government are currently considering further roll-out.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “Drinking Banning Orders on conviction (DBO’s) are available in 50 local justice areas. We believe they are a useful tool to help communities manage problem individuals and help those individuals to address the reasons for their behaviour.

“We are currently considering the impact and effectiveness of DBO’s and will make an announcement on their further roll out in due course."
