Tony Hughes, former food business guru at Mitchells & Butlers (M&B), has joined the Restaurant Group as a non-executive director.

Hughes retired from his position as managing director of M&B's restaurants division in October last year and stepped down from the pubco's main board on December 31 2007.

Alan Jackson, chairman of The Restaurant Group plc, said he was delighted to welcome an executive of Hughes' calibre.

"Tony has a wealth of experience in the restaurant industry with a strong background of developing and growing branded restaurants. I am confident that he will be a valuable addition to the Board."

Hughes joined Bass Taverns in 1995 as managing director of its restaurant division. When Bass/Six Continents demerged in 2003 to become Intercontinental Hotels and M&B Hughes was appointed to the plc board of M&B.

Prior to joining Bass, Hughes held senior management roles at B&Q, J.A. Devenish and Whitbread, where he was operations director of Beefeater and managing director of TGI Friday's.
