Six of Manchester’s independent food and beverage producers are to join local breweries to create a series of drinks for this year’s Manchester Beer Week.

Each team is creating a drink inspired by the flavours of the producers involved, and the final products will be launched at a food and drinks fair at Runaway Brewery on Sunday 25 June.

Manchester Gin and Manchester Brewing Co are producing a New England-style IPA brewed with fresh citrus peel, while Marble Brewery and seafood trader Holy Crab are collaborating on a langoustine and pineapple gose – a sour and salty style of beer, originating from Germany.

Meanwhile, Runaway Brewery and Pollen Bakery will attempt to create a white oatmeal stout conditioned over whole coffee beans and cocoa nibs, inspired by Pollen’s oat porridge sourdough and chocolate brownies.

Vegan ice cream float

The award-winning Cloudwater Brew Co and ice cream parlour Ginger’s Comfort Emporium have produced a chocolate and salted caramel imperial stout. This will be served with vegan ice cream as a beer float.

The only non-beer collaboration comes from community-sourced cider makers The Moss Cider Project and sour beer specialists Chorlton Brewing Co. The two producers have created dry-hopped cider.

The final two brews are produced from waste fruit and herbs. Local craft brewery Beer Nouveau and The Real Junk Food Project have made two IPAs – one with grapefruit and one with apricot and basil.

'Something special'

Manchester Beer Week organiser Connor Murphy said the collaborations had helped to “strengthen the sense of community and co-operation” between the city’s food and drink scene.

“This is one of the most exciting things to emerge from this year’s Manchester Beer Week because it’s really encouraging to see a variety of the city’s independent producers are so willing to work together to create something special for the people of this city,” he said.

“This idea grew from a chat with Mark Welsby, the brewer at Runaway, who suggested it would be interesting to break the usual mould of brewers collaborating with other brewers. Since then, it has taken a life of its own and has really helped to strengthen the sense of community and co-operation around the city’s independent beer and food scene.”

All the creations will be available at Runaway Brewery on 25 June between 12pm and 6pm.
