The Carlsberg Group has launched a new sustainability programme with the aim of eliminating carbon emissions and halving water usage by 2030.

The Together Towards Zero initiative also pledges that the group will exclusively use renewable electricity at its breweries by 2022.

The organisation says that the programme is a response to increasing consumer demand for sustainable products.

Global challenges

Carlsberg Group CEO Cees ‘t Hart said: “Global challenges such as climate change and water scarcity require strong collective action, and with Together Towards Zero, we’re setting new industry standards for science-based and partnership-driven sustainability.

I'm certain that in achieving our targets we'll create efficiency improvements, risk reduction and a more resilient business that exists in harmony with local communities and the environment.”

The pledge is part of a wider move by Carlsberg as part of its Sail’22 strategy, which also seeks to cut down on water wastage, irresponsible drinking and work-related accidents.

Genuine leadership

Carbon Trust chief executive Tom Delay said Carlsberg had taken “genuine leadership” on the issue of sustainability.

He said: “Just getting better is no longer good enough. Carlsberg’s ambitions go above and beyond the levels of carbon reduction that science tells us are necessary to keep global warming below 2°C.

“Carlsberg has taken a genuine leadership position on some of the most critical environmental issues the world currently faces, by developing an ambitious long-term business strategy that focuses on delivering a sustainable future.”

Last week, the UK arm of the group unveiled its new crafted handbook,  featuring five new draught and 12 new speciality beers.
