The creator of American HBO TV series The Wire spent hundreds of pounds in a London pub, buying pints for punters to apologise for recent tweets sent by US president Donald Trump.

David Simon took to Twitter after Trump criticised Mayor of London Sadiq Khan following the terrorist attacks in London Bridge.

In a tweet on 5 June, Trump wrote: "Pathetic excuse by London mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his 'no reason to be alarmed' statement. MSM is working hard to sell it!"

Quoting the tweet, Simon wrote: “I stood in a London pub last night and spent hundreds of pounds buying pints, apologizing for your venal ignorance. It was not at all enough.”

Compelled to apologise

In previous tweets, Simon had said that he had felt compelled to find a pub and “let random folk order pints” on his card as a way of saying sorry for Trump, and he did so in the Crown, Seven Dials, near Covent Garden.

One recipient, Louise Brealey, tweeted: “David Simon bought everyone in the Crown, in Seven Dials, a pint last night to apologise for his vomitous president.”

Ferdinand Kingsley, who received three pints from Simon, called him a “very excellent man”.
