Cumbria-based brewer the Eden Brewery is to test the water for its beers in Japan, as well as further European markets, after doubling profits.

The brewer has doubled profits every year since starting production in March 2012, with turnover increasing by 12.5% for the 12 months to 30 June.

Managing director Jason Hill said: “We have grown every year since we started production and it’s nice to see that.

Wide range of styles

“I think one of the important things for us is that we produce beers in a wide range of styles to appeal to different markets and we also have an interest in spreading our brand beyond Cumbria.”

Brand expansion plans will see the brewer investigate the potential of exporting to Japan and markets in Sweden and France.

Exploring other markets will also ensure the business has other revenue streams, a need made apparent following flooding in December last year by Storm Desmond.

Hill added: “The flow of visitors to pubs in the towns and villages in the area is a big driver for the amount of beer that we breweries sell.

Damaged lots of businesses

“The flooding over the winter damaged lots of businesses in the area, closed the A591 through the Central Lakes for a long time and has had a knock-on effect on bookings.

“Taking all this into account, we are really glad to see these financial results.”

Eden Brewery boosted trade during the poor weather by supplying more beers to premium retailers and distributors nationwide, said Hill.

“Making a range of [high] quality products to appeal to different types of people all over the country and the world is a good way of protecting us from local economic shocks, such as Storm Desmond,” he added.
