A collection of breweries and businesses have come together to produce a beer to celebrate this weekend’s Great Get Together events, which were inspired by murdered MP Jo Cox.

The events are being organised in memory of the Batley and Spen MP, who was killed a year ago in the run-up to the EU referendum vote.

The beer, a 4.2% pale ale brewed at Adnams brewery, is the result of the collective effort of breweries from across the country and social enterprise company The Good Beer Co.

A charitable cause

The breweries involved are Adnams, Arkell's, Cliff Quay, Elgoods, Fuller's, Harviestoun, Joseph Holt, Joules, JW Lees, Marston's, Palmers, St Austell, Theakston, Thornbridge and Woodforde's.

Also supporting the project is Simpsons Malt, which is donating the malt for the beer; Charles Faram, which is providing the hops; O-I is giving the glass for the bottles; Darley will cover the costs of labels; and Colourscan is going to donate pump clips for the cask beer.

The beer will be available in bottles and cask throughout June and July in more than 100 pubs across the country, with all profits going to The Jo Cox Foundation.

'Raising a glass'

St Austell brewing director Roger Ryman said the beer demonstrated the “strong collaborative spirit” within the industry.

“We’re delighted to have been able to contribute to this great brew,” he said. “It’s for a brilliant cause and also sums up the strong collaborative spirit that exists between the many different breweries great and small across the country.

“We hope everyone enjoys the Great Get Together pale ale and we’ll be raising glasses to the Jo Cox Foundation in all our small batch pubs across the south-west to celebrate this praiseworthy event.”

The Great Get Together takes place this weekend (16-18 June).
