Daniel Thwaites has unveiled its Christmas beer, which pays tribute to a former chairman of the brewery. Elma's Pound (4.9 per cent ABV) has been brewed in recognition of Elma Yerburgh who was Daniel Thwaites' granddaughter and the chairman of the brewery for 58 years.

The full-bodied, auburn coloured beer boasts bittersweet flavours with a spicy aromatic finish, with the heritage of Lancashire having a big influence on the name of the tipple. Elma's Pound is Thwaites' fourth and final seasonal beer of 2007, following on from the Double Century, Wainwright and Flying Shuttle ales.

Yerbrugh saw the brewery through both World Wars up to her death in 1946 and was a great benefactor in the east-Lancashire area, valuing her loyal workforce, particularly at Christmas. She also began the tradition which carries on to this day - giving employees a sovereign for their Christmas bonus.

Over the years, this became known as Elma's Pound and Thwaites' brands marketing manager Lee Williams said: "It has been fantastic to see the success that our commemorative beers have achieved this year and we are sure this will continue over Christmas with the addition of Elma's Pound."
