Since taking over the site, manager Jason Allison has created a venue that’s become the cider Mecca of the city purely through word of mouth. Dozens of usually dull and drab bag-in-box ciders have been painted black, mounted on the wall behind the bar and chalked up with their details, including names, styles and strength. A welcome and efficient point of difference from other venues.
Staff are encouraged to try each cider as they come into stock and are also treated to trips out to meet producers.
Cider pours are close to perfect as a result of the high turnover of each product. While the impact of the back bar is immense, the pub also boasts a wide range of draft ciders including sparkling, sweet and light pink variants so those keen to get into cider can start with flavours that aren’t too challenging.
To keep stock fresh, Allison orders in realistic quantities and is willing to sell out of varieties in order to keep wastage to a minimum. A limited food offer is served but to keep large groups coming back, cider tastings and festivals are held regularly.
