Sales of rum in the UK on-trade are growing at 17% and pubs can do more to benefit from the boom, according to Pernod Ricard UK on-trade channel director Ian Peart ahead of the company’s study tour session at The Morning Advertiser’s (MA) Future Trends: Spirits event next month.

Rum’s versatility is capturing the consumers’ imagination as more people begin to realise it goes with more than just cola, but pubs need to make a bigger push.

“You can drink rum neat, mixed and in cocktails,” explains Peart in this exclusive video. “There are lots of different ways you can enjoy it.

‘Buttered rum’

“Even at Christmas we’re doing a Havana Club buttered rum. So alongside the mulled wine operators usually serve at Christmas, we’re doing a different take.”

Spirits as a whole are growing in the on-trade and it is, therefore, important operators take the opportunity to learn how the uptick can affect their business at the Future Trends: Spirits event in London on 3 October, Peart added.

“Spirits is in tremendous growth in the on-trade and I think it’s interesting for all operators to see where the category is going and how they can make the best of it.

“Liquor in the on-trade is in decline and spirits are growing at 3% and that’s mainly to do with premium spirits.”
