Biggest fall in drinking for 60 years

The UK saw the biggest fall in alcohol consumption in 60 years, according to the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).
The BBPA's new Statistical Handbook reveals that there was a 6% decline in alcohol consumption in 2009 — the sharpest decrease since 1948.
It was also the fourth annual decline in five years and UK drinkers are now consuming 13% less alcohol than in 2004. The UK consumption remains below the EU average.
The new book also reveals that the UK is one of the highest taxed on beer with the second highest duty rate in the EU — 10 times higher than Germany and seven times higher than France.
Key stats in the book:
• The UK ale market increased its market share of all beers in 2009 for the first time since the 1960s.
• Ale's success is also reflected in the number of UK brewers, which is now at its highest since 1940.
• Beer is by far the pubgoers favourite tipple, making up 60% of all alcohol sales in pubs, hotels, and restaurants compared to s

RE: Biggest fall in drinking for 60 years

Talking to yourself again I see.

I note the bash the MA again. Perhaps the MA should stop reporting the GMB/FP spin, they would really then be doing a service for licensees.

RE: Biggest fall in drinking for 60 years

We now know the answer.

MA have changed the figures first reported and now go with the BBPA figure.

This is what todays MA first reported on this story

The total beer spend is

Biggest fall in drinking for 60 years

"Those who suggest otherwise need to focus on the hard facts.

"This handbook also reminds us of just how vital a role beer and pubs play in the UK economy, in terms of turnover, jobs, and tax revenues

The totally discredited BBPA flounders around much like the increasingly discredited MA.

Behold the glossy 'handbook', vital indeed, if only the original construction had been correct.

How correct was information supplied by the totally discredited BBPA to the VOA?

Biggest fall in drinking for 60 years

And wouldn't the supermarkets like to get their hands on that missing beer market. Next target? Bars in the supermarket while you shop? Perhaps not because that would mean the supermarkets taking responsibility for their sales of alcohol.

MA now reports a third version of this

First version

The total beer spend is

RE: Biggest fall in drinking for 60 years

where are the figures for supermarket alcohol sales??

Time was we were all worried about exports from the continent!!

RE: Biggest fall in drinking for 60 years

Nick, there's a lot of confusion surrounding these figures, but as I understand it (and as reported on TV) the BBPA figures are drawn from HMRC records of liquor duty collected. So the reported 13% drop in alcohol consumption since 2004 is across the board - both 'on' and 'off' trade.

One would have expected the BBPA to have something to say about the decline in consumption in the 'on' trade. If overall consumption has reduced by 13%, and the growth in 'off'-trade sales is obvious to any casual observer, dare we contemplate how big is the decline in 'on' trade sales.

No wonder that very statistic is missing from the BBPA's press release.

RE: Biggest fall in drinking for 60 years

George in a Scottish report the on trade decline was 13% with only an 8% increase in off sales. Off course these figures don't take account of smuggled or legitimate oversees booze. In exactly the same way as official cigarette sales never do.
