'Extend smoking ban to beer gardens', says report

Smoke-free areas should be extended to beer gardens and other outside areas to help combat “social smoking”, according to researchers in New Zealand.

'Extend smoking ban to beer gardens', says report

So laws are going to be made based on 13 people in New Zealand!
Heck they used slightly more than that to conjour up non existant "passive smoking"
Just another attack on our industry

RE: 'Extend smoking ban to beer gardens', says report

"...academics from the University of Otago interviewed 13 young adult “social smokers” between the age of 19 and 25, and found the majority supported extending anti-smoking legislation."

Wow, a total sample of 13 people? You don't get much more conclusive than that.

Hardly surprising when you consider this debacle was organised by the New Eels Land equivalent of ASH. These anti-tobacco groups are all linked by a worldwide network so sooner or later they'll be pushing the same daft idea over here.

Had it not been for the change in government New Labour were already considering extending the ban to incluse anywhere within 30 metres of a pub. This was part of their 'smoking ban revue', a hatchet job that was scrapped by the Tories.

A UK survey of 1,312 PUBGOERS in the 18-25 age group, conducted simultaneously in 5 major cities on a Saturday night, found 98.4% supported indoor smoking rooms while 99.7% thought pubs/clubs should have the choice of being smoking or non smoking.

Of these 66% were non-smokers. 79% did not object to being indoors in the company of smokers and only 7% believed SHS posed any kind of health threat. 85% of the total said the smoking ban had affected the frequency and duration of their pub visits.

RE: 'Extend smoking ban', says unnappeasable anti smoking lobby

It is irritating enough having "non-smokers" scrounge fags off you are inside but out side this happens with greater frequency in my experience. They should buy their own fags.

All the more reason to repeal/relax the spiteful, unnecessary, anti-pub,job destroying, social life disrupting, divisive indoor smoking ban ASAP.

It will not cost the treasury a penny when it happens.

RE: 'Extend smoking ban to beer gardens', says report

This is the biggest problem Pete! This imbecilic "survey" from N Zealand will soon appear as part of 'a conclusive and growing body of evidence' presented by ASH as absolute proof that more pubs should close because a non smoker wants to sit outside when it's warm but a naughty smoker might also wish to do the same-oops! sorry, the naughty smoker has no choice anymore! Non smokers have 100% of the interior to choose from, why the hell should they have any say whatsoever in what happens outside?
Out of interest Pete, I got my hands on the so called "Smoking Ban Review" (almost as soon as it was written) as ordered up by Labour-most of it was written up within 6 months of the ban being implemented...and we wasted £1m of public money on it as it was shelved.
These so called health nutters will stop at nothing. It doesn't matter to them that this country is financially crumbling, they only have a one track mind!

Reminds me of an amusing story from a local hostelry one sunny day last year:
Nice fine day so the lads, all ex regulars, decided to sit outside the pub for a change instead of one of their gardens, and have a few drinks. A rather haughty lady and her friend appeared and sat at the next table, plonking down their cutlery and table numbered spoon as they did so. She looked across and demanded that the building lads removed themselves as she wished to eat-and promptly turned exceedingly red when Mike answered, in an equally posh voice, "look old girl, it's really not on is it! I mean to say, here we are enjoying all that Britain in sunshine has to offer, minding our own business, outside, in the open air, yet we are being harassed in the only environment we are now allowed to enjoy. be a dear and take yourself and your companion to the parts that you campaigned for so successfully for I most certainly do not want to have to smell your choice of food, nor suffer the smell of it nor even the stench of your obnoxious bodily sprays which are used, supposedly, to overpower any bodily odours you may transport around with you."
Her face was an absolute picture, she complained to the waitress who told her the lads were doing absolutely nothing wrong-and took herself off to eat inside the pub. Just a magic moment, it really was. :)

RE: 'Extend smoking ban to beer gardens', says report

How stupid- why not just ban smoking anywhere on Earth- oh! I know- too much tax! As a grown up adult I should have the choice whether to smoke in the open air or not (I choose not to smoke at all by the way). Another nail inthe coffin of our trade
