Licensees plan protest at Enterprise and Punch HQs

Frustrated licensees are planning a protest march to highlight the plight of tenants outside the headquarters of Britain's two biggest pubcos — Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns.
The protest will take place on 26 January and bring together members of several licensee groups including Justice for Licensees, Fair Pint, Save the Great British Pub, Freedom For Pubs Association, Freedom2Choose and Colm Powell — the licensee who went on hunger strike in a coffin at his pub.
It is believed that music mogul Vince Power, who helped fund the Fair Pint campaign, is also involved — he is providing a mobile bar for the day to demonstrate the difference between tied pub prices and free-of-tie prices.
Protestors plan to hit Enterprise first before moving on to Punch's HQ in Burton-on-Trent.
"There is a lot of hurt out there about the way tenants are being treated," said protest organiser Inez Ward of Justice for Licensees and Enterprise lessee at Mavericks in Newquay, Cornwall. "We want honesty,

RE: Licensees plan protest at Enterprise and Punch HQs

Si Smith, how long have you been dealing with Enterprise? You are surely a minority, Or could you be related to Ted Tuppen himself. Get into the real world and start to read what is actually going on out there. Because one day it's gonna be you, and lets hope all the licensees on the march have forgotten your comments. We need to support one another and stop thinking sefishly ( Si Smith)

Si Smith, you are not the first to try and scare us into believing that when these 2 Pub Companies collapse they will inevitably be replaced by something much, much worse. Amongst the propoganda we've been told it would be impossible for new owners to release lessees from the tie, and we've been told the Russian mafia are ready to pounce (or was it the Cubans?)

Of course, it's conceivable that some bunch of spivs will fancy their chances of stepping into 'dead-mens shoes' by being in the front row at the fire-sale and then charging totally unsustainable rents together with outrageous wholesale prices. You couldn't absolutely rule out brain-dead bankers being prepared to put up the money (notwithstanding their refusal to lend on anything else!) I'm not so sure the share floatation will go too well though.

The hope is that after the collapse, the government will have to step in and put a stop to the practices that have been going on.

If you truly believe the demise of Pub Cos can only be followed by something much worse you are in a very dark place.

That is one WILD post there Si Smith. Very interesting.

Where is your pub? What kind of operation is it? How much did you invest in it? How long have you been in the trade? and what are you doing that's so different from all the other people I know from tewnty five years in the licensed trade, many of them award winning business people, none of whom has a good word to say about the pubcos, their pricing, levels of service or value to sustainability.

What do you got than no one else seems to have that makes you get all that attention and support from Enterprise?

Here's an example of the pubco non-existent partnership?

High rents + high beer prices + no pubco help = pub closing!

The first thing the pubco will do now is to lure a new romantic tennant in,
charging them an 'ingoing amount of money' probably around

I am delighted for you and i wish you the very best. The people who will be going to the protest have a different story to tell based on their experiences. I remember each much have their say and i hope you post will be taken into context within the ten pages of posts on this subject. I would love to know the name of your BDM as i know most of them.

We are already in the hands of property tycoons making a big fat return on their investments so no news there.

Roll on the 26th

If you feel soo stongly i suggest that you turn up to back up Enterprise?

Hi, I am trying to plan a protest that will kick both Punch and Enterprise into touch forever and amen. If you want a copy please email kickingpubcos@yahoo.co.uk - believe me this is going to work

Si, you must be one of the fortunate few that Enterprise have spent some of their 9 million fund which they say is available to reinvest in their pubs. They didn't spend it on mine. Once we had signed on the dotted line, no lease repair works, which were huge and left me at a distinct trading disadvantage, not to mention that I was consequently paying an unfair rent as the property was not in a "tenantable" state... Pubcos have become estate agents, pure and simple. They are targeted to turn pubs round to anyone with a cheque book and reasonable credit rating... they know that pub business will fail because it just cannot work on the figures attainable. They do not care about people's lives - to some extent it must be caveat emptor, I understand that. But to put people into failing pubs, that fail again and again and will never work on the profit margins available because of the beer tie is just pure malpractice (at its best) and daylight robbery (at it's worst). Myself and my husband also had a good relationship with our BDM but that didn't change the fact that everything (more or less) went from the till drawer into the bank and into theirs. That is an impossible situation in this time of global crisis and could result in the UK losing so many more of it's valuable institutions - the pubs.
Enjoy your success. Long may it last. But when you have lost everything you have worked for, put your distressed sobbing staff out of work, said goodbye to your customers and friends, had a nervous breakdown, moved three times in 2 months all over the UK just to stay under a roof with your two young children, I suggest you revisit this forum and give us the opportunity to hear your point of view then.
Good luck.

No of course they won't react publicly - except to perhaps bring out the tea and biscuits to seem conciliatory in the eyes of the media. But this how all protesting groups have had their voices finally acknowledged. It takes time and is hard work - thank god for the likes of JFL and Fair Pint (sorry if I missed anyone) because those groups who see the problems now and seek a solution, will benefit those who come after and run the pubs that the likes of me have had to leave.. I wish my ex pub the best success - i think it was unique (just as you all probably feel about your own). It will never have a fair chance as long as Enterprise own it and lease it under a crippling tie and for unfair rent. Lobbying, protesting, gets there eventually. Personally, I think the beer tie will go this time.
