Pubcos face new Beer Orders

The Government will issue a new set of Beer Orders forcing pubcos to offer free of tie leases and a guest beer option within 15 months if the industry fails to do so voluntarily.
That's the astonishing news from new pubs minister John Healey as he gave his full backing to the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee report, which set a June 2011 deadline for reform ( 'Pubcos have until June 2011 to change' ).

Although this is all good news regarding the possibility of the tie being scrapped etc I can't help but feel a little dubious about the whole thing. Pub Co's are in it for the money and I fear that they will just increase publicans rents, or raise the cost of in-goings etc to claw back the money they will loose from selling over-priced, tied beers.

They will of course try to shift the wet rent to the dry rent to balance the books. This will not hold up at arbitration and will expose the true rents, putting off new lessees, who will go else where. They are dead ducks, it is important to make their exit from the industry swift, before more damage is done. The so called family brewers are no different and I'm glad they have not managed to wriggle out of this. Many thanks to the many pressure groups who have forced this despicable business model and it's morally and ethically bereft enforcers to it's knees. Finish them off!

Oz, what you say about wet & dry rent is the way I see it too. One way or another the Pub Cos have got to bite the bullet. This is a crisis for them that has no palatable options for them. My in-depth analysis is that they are stuffed!

I agree with what you are saying georgette but then this means fewer people taking the PUBS on as they will price them out altogether more needs to be done now for the Tenants who are suffering because of the Robbing Pubco. So come Goverment lets do the right thing and Now.

OZ, very well said, the longer these pubcons carry on, the more permanently closed great british Pubs we shall end up with, it is time to put these limping old dinosaurs out of their misery!

RE: Pubcos face new Beer Orders

Georgette, this is the whole point, the pubcons cannot do anything to get themselves out of this situation, they are on the verge of collapseing now, putting up rents isn't going to work, niether is anything else, these pubcos have borrowed far too much money on the premise that the beer sales would always go up! each pub is costing the pubcons over a thousand pounds per week in interest alone.
