CAMRA: looking on with interest at Thwaites brewery sale

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) says it hopes that Daniel Thwaites remains committed to brewing following the sale of its brewery to Sainsbury's.

Thwaites has revealed plans to sell its Blackburn brewery to Sainsbury's as it looks to build a "state of the art" site elsewhere in the region.

"I hope they are committed to brewing and will not use this as an excuse to exit that side of it, so we shall be looking on with interest," said CAMRA research and information manager Iain Loe.

"It is not uncommon for brewers to move from a city centre location to the outskirts of Blackburn and if they are building a new brewery for the 21st century, then that can be a good thing as long as they remain committed to brewing beer for its own pubs and the freetrade."
