According to reports, Cameron is to visit to a hospital in north-east England today, where he will promise to tackle the "scandal of our society" caused by alcohol abuse.

He will suggest that innovative solutions such as drunk tanks, increased numberd police on patrol in A&E departments and booze buses be backed by the Government.

Drunk tanks, which are popular in America and Europe, are used to house drunk people overnight until they sober up. This means they are not formally arrested or taken to hospital.

According to The Telegraph Mr Cameron will say: “Every night, in town centres, hospitals and police stations across the country, people have to cope with the consequences of alcohol abuse. And the problem is getting worse.

"Over the last decade we’ve seen a frightening growth in the number of people — many under age — who think it’s acceptable for people to get drunk in public in ways that wreck lives, spread fear and increase crime.

“This is one of the scandals of our society and I am determined to deal with it.”

The government is expected to publish its alcohol strategy in the next few weeks. It is widely mooted that minimum pricing will be part of the proposals.
