Miliband: tough talking on cheap booze

Miliband: tough talking on cheap booze

New Labour leader Ed Miliband has backed action against cut-price alcohol sold in supermarkets.

In his acceptance speech at the Labour Party Conference, Miliband said that Labour must support pubs in their struggle against below cost sales of alcohol in the off-trade.

"We must be on the side of those who are dismayed by the undermining of the local pub with cut-price alcohol from supermarkets," he said.

"We must shed old thinking and stand up for those who believe there is more to life than the bottom line.

"We stand for these things not because we are social conservatives but because we believe in community, belonging and solidarity."

His brother David had voiced his support for reform of the beer tie in the run-up to the leadership contest but it is not yet known of Miliband juniors stance on the issue.
