Gluten-free beers win awards at FreeFrom Food Awards
Gluten-free beers Green’s Lager Dry Hopped and Celia Premium Czech Lager were awarded top prizes at the FreeFrom Food Awards.

Green’s Lager Dry Hopped (4% ABV) won Best Non-Barley Beer and Celia Premium Czech Lager (4.5% ABV) won Best Barley-Based Beer.

The awards focus on specialist food and drink for allergy suffers. The ceremony was held at Royal College of Physicians in London’s Regent's Park.

David Ware, owner of Green’s gluten-free brewery, was especially pleased to win an award as he had only submitted the beer to judges 24 hours before the final deadline.

“Our beers are gluten-free, but are also suitable for vegans and other allergy sufferers. The problem is licensees are reluctant to invest in our products because they are nervous about the gluten-free label,” he said.

Green's Blonde Ale 5.8% was awarded Silver at Inside Beer’s International Beer Challenge last year.

The Wold Top Brewery Scarborough Fair IPA 6.5% was awarded highly commended in the barley based beer category.

Gill Mellor, joint owner of Wold Top Brewery was delighted by the award, and is confident that the quality of gluten-free beer is equal to regular beers.

“What’s important for us is that our beer stands alone as a high quality product aside from being gluten-free. We never promoted it as a gluten-free beer; it just has it on the label. The quality of all the beers which entered was very high, and would have been enjoyed by any beer fan.

“People are prejudice towards allergy-free products, but we want to teach them that the taste and quality is no different.”
