In an address to the Drinkaware annual conference, Henley admitted that whilst the government has a role to play with regards to alcohol misuse, a focus on changing “public attitudes” is just as crucial.
“There is obviously a role for government to play in terms of regulation but it is also one about changing attitudes, changing public attitudes, in terms of how they perceive drink and what they are going to do about it.
“We do believe in government we have a tough task on our hands. We have made it clear we will not tolerate the alcohol-related harm we have experienced over the last decade or more.
“That is why when we introduced the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act we introduced a package of new measures to rebalance the licensing act of 2003 in favour of local communities.”
