MPs are to debate proposals to abandon the beer duty escalator in Parliament.

Conservative MP Gavin Williamson has secured a debate on the motion in the Main Chamber of the House of Commons on Monday 2 July.

Although there will be no vote on the issue, the South Staffordshire MP said he wanted to keep the issue prominent in the minds of ministers. A Treasury minister will be asked to respond to the debate.

“I’m very keen that the Government looks at the whole issue of the beer duty escalator in a lot of depth in the run up to the Budget,” Williamson said.

“I think it’s really important that backbench members of Parliament are raising this issue and Government ministers have a real look at this and look at the costs put on the industry.”

Williamson said he has several breweries in his constituency, including the Marston’s-owned Bank’s brewery.

The debate is to take place at some point after 2.30pm.

The industry petition calling for the end of the duty escalator has hit just under 60,000 signatures. Go to http://saveyourpint.co.uk for details
