Two pubs have each won a £2,000 makeover courtesy of Glidden Trade's Paint and a Pint competition, run in association with the Morning Advertiser.

The Vallum at Dumpling Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was one of the winning pubs. The Pipers Inn in Ashcott, Somerset, was the other lucky pub, after competition judges were impressed by the "originality and creativity" of its entry.

"We saw Paint and a Pint in the Morning Advertiser and thought it would be a fantastic way to renovate our business and give it a new lease of life," said owner Roger Buckley.

Both pubs will receive a makeover from Glidden Trade and money towards a reopening party.

The company also awarded second place prizes of £500 and expert advice to the Royal Oak Inn in Wantage, Oxfordshire; Oddfellows Arms in Swinton, Manchester; and the Red Lion in Cheswardine, Shropshire.

Five third place prizes of £100 in Glidden Trade vouchers went to the Boot & Shoe in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire; the Waggon & Horses in Halesowen, West Midlands; the Somerset Arms in Plymouth; the Frog & Nightgown in Horsham, West Sussex; and the Frog & Orange in Canterbury.
