Plymouth police set to ban glassware in pubs to tackle crime

Glass bottles and traditional glasses are to be banned from pubs and bars in Plymouth city centre to stamp out late night violent crime.

Plymouth police called for the prohibition in “troublesome night spots” after 29 incidents of violence involving glassware occurred in the city centre at 20 different venues over the last year.

Licensed premises in Plymouth will be encouraged to switch to plastic, aluminium or reinforced glass containers which do not create sharp edges when broken, while areas of the city where two or more glassings have taken place could be forced to stop using glass altogether.

Chief Inspector Ian Drummond-Smith, who is responsible for policing in the city centre, said: “I have met with many of the local licensees and we are working together to reduce violence.
“Any premises that experiences more than one incident in a year may well face a ban on glass in their venue. There are plenty of alternatives available, including safety glass, plastic or aluminium.

“In accordance with this policy, we have recently commenced legal proceedings against a Plymouth bar in an attempt to ban glass at their premises.

“We are following in the footsteps of many other towns such as Cardiff and Newquay”.

A similar scheme initiated in Newquay led to an 80% drop in serious violence in the town.
