The trade has raised between £250,000 and £300,000 for a fighting fund to challenge the proposed fee increases from music-royalties collection agency PPL.

And another trade body, the British Holiday & Home Parks Association, has joined the group of associations challenging the proposed price hike for PPL’s specially featured entertainment (SFE) tariff, which would see some large prem-ises face a 4,000% rise.

Other groups challenging the plan include the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers, the Bar Entertainment & Dance Association, the British Beer & Pub Association, the British Hospitality Association, the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, along with a number of individual operators.

PPL, the organisation that collects royalties on behalf of performers and record companies, is proposing that music-royalty fees for special events such as discos be increased because it considers the current charges are not a “fair reflection” of the value of the licence.

However, trade associations are not commenting on the negotiations for confidentiality reasons.

There has already been a victory in the campaign, with PPL shifting back the proposed implementation date from April 2012 to January 2013.
