The Government is to consult on plans to increase maximum prizes available for Category C fruit machines to £100.

From July 2009 the maximum prize has been £70.

News of the consultation has been welcomed by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), whose chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: “BBPA has pushed hard for a £100 prize for Category C machines to allow us to refresh our offer in pubs for customers wishing to play low stake and prize amusement machines, so this is good news.

“There are concerns over the red tape for pubs surrounding the new Machine Games Duty, so a £100 prize will go some way in ensuring that Category C fruit machines remain an attraction for pubs and their customers. They are ‘part of the furniture’ in thousands of pubs, and provide a much-needed income stream.”
