A bar in East Sussex has had its licence suspended for two weeks following incidents including “excessive drunkenness and violence”.

Coda Bar in Eastbourne had its licence revoked for a fortnight after the licensing team at Sussex Police submitted an application to review the licence.

The police and the premise licence holder attended a hearing on Wednesday 3 August in front of the licensing sub-committee, at which the committee found in favour of the police.

Concerns

Police were concerned for the safety of the public, and the current supervisor of the bar will be removed along with the licence suspension. Conditions will also be added to the licence of the site.

Sergeant Denham Vokins of East Sussex's alcohol harm reduction unit said: “The way the premises was being run fell way below the standards required under the Licensing Act. There were a number of incidents involving excessive drunkenness, violence, threats, antisocial behaviour. We want to make sure a venue is safe for those who are visiting and enjoying it.”

Support

Inspector Rachel Barrow of Eastbourne’s neighbourhood policing team said when the police requested the local authority to review a premises licence, it is not a decision that is taken lightly: “Prior to this point we had tried on numerous occasions to help support and work with the premises licence holder.

“Management of the premises did not improve sufficiently to satisfy our concerns and public safety was put at risk. I am grateful to our licensing team for its application and hard work. We will be monitoring closely whether the premises is managed and operated safely from now onwards.”
