Club closed following teen drug deaths
Fabric in Farringdon, central London, issued a statement on its Facebook page on 11 August, informing clubbers the premises would be shut that weekend and offered anyone who had bought a ticket during that time a refund.
Police statement
Just one day later, the Metropolitan Police said: “Due to concerns about serious crime associated with Fabric nightclub, Islington Police made an application to Islington Council for a summary review of the nightclub’s licence on 10 August.
“As a result, the licensing sub committee has decided to suspend the licence as an interim measure, pending a full review hearing.
“Officers felt the need to act due to concerns about the safety of those attending the club because of the supply of class A drugs in the venue and the recent deaths of two young men linked to the club.
“London has a world-renowned night-time economy and people should be able to enjoy it safely, without concerns of serious crime. The Met is committed to fully playing its part in keeping people safe.
“Islington Council’s licensing committee will now review the licence in due course.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has tweeted about the club.
Previous history
Fabric have said they will be issuing a statement later this week regarding the closure.
The central London club became a member of the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers back in 2013, three years after the venue went into administration and was sold to Fabric Life.
This is not the first time the club’s licence has come under fire. In 2015, Fabric fought to stay open and won its battle after a successful appeal against Islington Council’s proposed licensing conditions of ID scanners and drugs detection dogs.
