Pubco Greene King has once again joined forces with cancer charity Macmillan to take part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning across its 1,800-wide estate.

This will be Greene King’s and its charity partner Macmillan’s fifth joint coffee morning where coffee and cake will be served to raise funds for victims of the horrific disease.

The pubco’s week-long charity event began today (Monday 26 September) and will continue until Sunday 2 October with Macmillan’s official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning taking place on Friday 30 September.

Resounding success

CEO of Greene King, Rooney Anand, said “Pubs are very much in the heart of the community so bringing together our teams and customers with coffee morning activities for Macmillan always proves a resounding success.

“We are really proud to have raised almost £500,000 for World’s Biggest Coffee Morning so far and, this year, we have more going on than ever across our 1,800 pubs so hope to reach a new fundraising record this year.”

Outstanding partner

Chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, Lynda Thomas, said: “Greene King has been an outstanding partner of ours throughout the past four years and I am really excited to see what the teams and their customers get up to in what will be our fifth coffee morning together.”

The ale-makers at Greene King are also getting involved and have traded their usual pints for cups of coffee to raise money as the team joined up in the Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, eating sweet treats to get into the spirit.

Men are 60% more likely to contract cancer and 70% more likely to die from the disease than women so Greene King is encouraging male staff and customers to get involved.

The charity and the pubco joined forces in May 2012 and since then, Greene King’s coffee mornings have raised almost £500,000 which is a fifth of the £2.5m already raised for Macmillan. Greene King also launched an initiative earlier this year where they were giving away free meals to Macmillan nurses.

Macmillan has also partnered Inglenook Inns & Taverns, whose MD took part in a sponsored cycle ride to raise funds for the charity.
