Amber Taverns is set to grow its Hogarths ‘gin palace’ brand to seven sites by the end of the year.

Managing director James Baer told the PMA's sister title, M&C Allegra, that the company’s first outlet in Wales, the former Retros bar in Swansea, will be converted to the brand with an opening in November.

The fourth Hogarths opened in Wakefield yesterday with the fifth in South Shields being converted at the moment.

Baer said the company was close to an agreement on another site in Leicester and was actively seeking more.

“The first few sites have worked really well. They have a bit of a story about them and perhaps appeal to a wider base. But they are still very much Amber pubs and while the gin is a big part of the character of the pub we are still serving the traditional favourites and we still have the live sports," he said.

"The last thing we want to do is alienate the audience we have worked hard to build up but it does give us an extra element.”

Baer said the company was close to securing its second site along the M4 corridor and was in the process of recruiting an area manager for its south Wales division.
