Ashover Brewery has taken on the lease at the Royal Oak, Old Tupton, Derbyshire, with a major refurbishment planned for the village pub.

The move takes the Derbyshire-based brewing pubco’s estate to five sites, with further expansion planned in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

The pub will now close for a £160,000 revamp, jointly funded by site owners Star Pubs & Bars and the brewer, before it reopens in early June under the name the Tupton Tap.

Changes will include upgrading the pub throughout in a traditional style, putting in three log burners, building a second snug area and installing a new kitchen to expand the site’s food offer.

Ashover Brewery managing director Kim Beresford said that the site’s location close to the company’s Clay Cross brewery would make the site a special one for the brewer.

“I’ve known the pub for many years. It is an imposing building in a prominent location and full of potential,” he added.

Ashover Brewery is hiring the site from Star Pubs & Bars, and the company’s managing director Lawson Mountstevens said that he was “delighted to be working with [Ashover Brewery] to rebuild a much-needed local pub with a fantastic choice of beers”.
