Following the launch last year of pop-up pub fundraiser, the Men United Arms, Masterchef judge Gregg Wallace, is calling on pubs across the country this autumn to throw open their doors and host a fundraising night in order to help save men’s lives.

Whether it’s hosting a quiz, a live music night or darts competition, Gregg is asking the public to encourage their locals to sign up and fundraise, in support of Prostate Cancer UK.

Currently one man per hour dies of prostate cancer in the UK. The Morning Advertiser has been actively involved in supporting the Men United Arms campaign over the last year, raising £9,000 at the Publican Awards in March.

By taking part, pubs can receive fundraiser kits to help make their event look the part and if they raise over £200, Prostate Cancer UK will send them more goodies including drip trays, beer mats, bunting, banners and t-shirts.

'Favourite local'

Plus, to add a little healthy competition, the top five fundraising pubs in the UK will be shortlisted to become Prostate Cancer UK’s favourite local, based on the amount raised, most innovative idea, customer involvement and their commitment to their local community. These pubs will then be promoted on social media and in their local area, before one is chosen by a panel of judges to be the charity’s ‘favourite local’.

Wallace said: “I’ve nominated my favourite local to host a fundraising event and even offered to bring the sausage rolls! I challenge everyone to do the same and help their pub become Prostate Cancer UK’s favourite local.

"This is a great way to get everyone in the community together to have a good time and raise money that will help save men’s lives."

Firbank supports Prostate Cancer UK

The Firbank Pub and Kitchen in Wythenshawe, Manchester threw open its doors last weekend to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

The Great British Pub Awards finalist raised £275 by hosting an evening of music and entertainment transforming the pub into the Men United Arms for the charity.

By taking part, The Firbank Pub and Kitchen is now in the running to be shortlisted and in with a chance of being named Prostate Cancer UK’s favourite local.

Licensee Simon Delaney said: "I decided to organise the event for Prostate Cancer UK because my father was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. I’m delighted by the money raised from the event - and everyone had a great time. I hope this can help the charity and contribute towards beating the disease and saving men’s lives."

James Beeby, director of fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: "We would like to thank The Firbank Pub and Kitchen for raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK. By doing this they are helping to make a real difference in furthering the fight against prostate cancer."
