Most pub managers under 30 are running businesses with a turnover of more than a million pounds, with fewer than three years training to gain the position, according to a survey by Pub & Bar Careers Perceptions.

The survey showed 60% of young managers were operating a high turnover pub, and of those 67% had gained their expertise in under three years.

Of the 200 people surveyed, 81% had begun their careers as glass collectors or bar staff before being promoted to managerial positions.

Experience

“Management is just one of the prosperous paths offered in the industry,” said Anthony Pender, vice-chairman of the Perceptions Group and managing director of the Yummy Pub Company.

“Over half of the bar staff surveyed stated that their biggest achievement is gaining relevant experience, this highlights the volume of skills that staff gain from working in a social environment, aiding with marketing and social media and assisting with HR.”

The survey included people who had worked in the leisure and hospitality sector alongside studying and other commitments, with three quarters of those surveyed having completed college or graduated from university.

The surveyed managers named customer service, leadership, administration, finance and HR as the most valuable business skills to gain from working in the industry.
