Sir Martin Narey, the former chief executive of Barnardo’s and chief executive of the National Offender Management Service, has been appointed as the new chairman of alcohol responsibility body, the Portman Group.

Narey will lead the organisation together with Henry Ashworth, chief executive and co-chair of the Government’s Responsibility Deal, in challenging producers to market their products responsibly and set the standard in responsible alcohol practices.

At the same time, Jenny Watson has been confirmed as the new chair of the Independent Complaints Panel taking over the role from Narey, who will step down following his appointment as Portman Group chair. Watson is the current chair of the Electoral Commission.

She will oversee a panel of eight independent members who decide whether the name, packaging or promotion of an alcoholic drink is in breach of the Portman Group Code of Practice responsibility rules. Complaints are raised by members of the public or other interested parties.

Narey said: “I am delighted to take on this role. I know, and have seen, the damage that alcohol can cause. But I also believe that when it is enjoyed responsibly, alcohol brings enjoyment to many and makes a positive contribution to our society. I have been impressed by the commitment from senior drinks businesses to marketing their products responsibly and I look forward to working with them in helping further to reduce the harm caused by the misuse of alcohol.”

Watson said: "I look forward to working with the Panel to ensure that complaints under the Portman Group’s Code of Practice continue to receive the rigorous independent scrutiny which is an important part of any self-regulatory process.”
