A pub in in South Oxhey, near Watford, Hertfordshire, risks being demolished and transformed into new flats, if a planning application is approved.

The Grapevine, which is currently still operating, could be converted into new accommodation for local residents to help tackle the “chronic shortage” of affordable homes in the local area.

The new housing project will include 33 residential apartments — either as rented or shared ownership.

Plans for the new homes were submitted to the Three Rivers District Council and the Watford Community Housing Trust last month (Monday 19 December) and are likely to be approved by March 2017.

‘Housing shortage’

Watford Community Housing Trust director of partnerships Gareth Lewis said:“The trust has submitted a planning application to provide much-needed new homes on the site of the Grapevine pub, with the full support of the current owner.

“The plans have been drawn up specifically to meet the infrastructure requirements for the area, which have been set out by Three Rivers District Council and indicate that new affordable housing is one of the top priorities locally.

“These plans will help to address the chronic shortage of affordable housing in South Oxhey and we are exploring the possibility of working directly in partnership with Three Rivers District Council to deliver the scheme.”

‘Positive’ feedback from locals

Lewis said the trust held a consultation event in November to give local residents the opportunity to review the plans and engage with councillors.

He added: “The feedback we received was very positive, especially with regard to the design of the proposed new buildings.

“We are confident that the new development would enhance the area as well as delivering desperately needed housing for local people.”

The licensee was not available for comment.
