Nicky Wragg of the Green Dragon in Lavington, Wiltshire, said that she has seen trade increase by more than 100%, compared with a normal Friday afternoon when the schools are open.
“Everyone’s been dragging their kids up the hill with their sledges, and when the kids get too cold they’re bringing them in for a hot chocolate,” she said.
“We had been really quiet all week because of road works that are due to last weeks, and we were wondering what we should do. But today, the builders were unable to get to the works, and all the locals couldn’t get into work because of all the snow.
“Trade has gone up by more than 100%, but that is just at lunchtime, it could be really quiet again in the evening because it is so cold.”
Graham Wheatley, manager of the Ty Mawr in Lisvane, Cardiff, has also seen lunchtime trade increase by 100%. “It’s been fantastic. We have been really busy. At one point there wasn’t a spare table for lunch. People have been on their sledges all morning.
"Once it goes dark it will get quiet, and we've advised people not to drive in."
Becky Wilkins, manager of the Barnt Green Inn in Rednal, Birmingham, said that she has seen more people in the pub than a usual Friday. The pub is offering a free hot drink for anyone that dines today.
“Because of our location, we’ve had a lot of walkers coming in, and the hot drinks have been flowing,” she said. “People have been calling to check if we’re open, and we’re letting everyone know through Facebook and Twitter.”
Unfortunately, it has not been a great day for some pubs. The Nags Head Tavern in Thornfalcon, Taunton, Somerset, has had no trade today.
Licensee Tom Adams said: “No one has been in today. There’s nothing we can do about it. We’ve just got to enjoy the time off, publicans don’t get a lot of time off."
The Pony & Trap in Chew Magna, Somerset, has had to close today because staff were unable to get to the pub.
A note on the pub’s website said: “Due to heavy snowfall in and around the area, we regret that the pub will be closed for both lunch and dinner on Friday 18th January. With the majority of staff unable to reach the pub and deliveries struggling to get through, we are unfortunately unable to open.”
