As the demand for diet and low-calorie drinks continues to rise, Stonegate has released a light Prosecco across its traditional pubs and Slug & Lettuce venues, and claims it is as close to “clean drinking” as you can get.

At 65 calories per 100ml and 75% less sugar than its regular variant, the exclusive launch of Gancia Leggero will leave customers who are “keeping an eye on their waistline” rejoice this summer, said the pubco.

Crafted from Glera Grapes and with an ABV of 11.5%, the rollout of the Italian sparkling wine has been developed at the request of Stonegate using the established 'Martinotti' method developed in Asti, Italy, in 1895, and still used today in both the Asti and Prosecco regions.

The result, a distinctive light and fruity sparkling wine packed with pear and apple flavours, is as close as it gets to "clean drinking", Stonegate claimed.

Dream come true

“This is every female’s dream come true,” said Suzanne Baker, commercial director.

“Prosecco is already considered one of the lighter drinks, and now with a skinny version, this is no doubt going to tap into the growing consumer trend for low-calorie and low-sugar products. It has all the hallmarks of one of our most successful launches to date.”

The pubco claims while variants of 'skinny Prosecco' has had limited availability in high-end stores such as Selfridges since last year, this is the first time wide stock availability of a lighter Prosecco in mainstream pubs has been available for the “average consumer”.

What the 'average' bottle contains

The average bottle of Champagne typically contains between 12 and 32g of sugar per litre and Prosecco between 12 and 15g per litre.

The Gancia Leggero Prosecco has 6g of sugar per litre.

The rollout started on 4 April in the traditional pubs, and will do so from 8 May in Slug & Lettuce branches.

Gancia Leggero Prosecco will be launching exclusively in the Stonegate Pub Company for six months, before becoming widely available across the on-trade.

Light Prosecco on the rise

Mitchells & Butlers has introduced the new wine brand The Skinny Fizz across a large segment of its pub estate this month.

It will be available in All Bar One, Browns, Castle Pubs, Nicholson’s, Miller & Carter and Premium Country Pub sites, as well as through the company’s Wine Cellar Club.
