Daredevil Guy Martin has saved the local Lincolnshire pub of his youth, Kirmington village’s Batemans Brewery-owned Marrowbone & Cleaver, and spent a considerable amount renovating it.

Martin’s sister Sally told local reporters the pub would be run with 10 staff members, play host to quizzes, bike rides and other “weird and wonderful” events.

She said: “It’s been completely renovated and we are going to be serving both food and drinks. The food menu will include traditional pub grub and we will have steak on the menu.

“We’ve had a lot of people asking if Guy will be working at the pub, which he won’t, but he will be popping in from time to time and he will attend any pub events he can.”

Batemans Brewery

Managing director of Batemans Brewery, Stuart Bateman, who had put the pub up for auction, revealed Martin had spent a lot of money doing the pub up after buying it and said it was being run very well.

Along with buying the pub, Martin also wanted to brew a special beer with Batemans.

“I explained to Guy that it would be extremely difficult just for one pub. The minimum brew length is 45 barrels, which is about 12,000 pints,” he told the local press.

“So we could have something completely unique for Guy – what we could do was a special blend of a variety of beers to produce something that was new and different tasting.”

Blended by Martin

The new brew is a blend of Batemans XB, XXXB, Gold and Salem Porter, blended by Martin.

The beer’s pump clip is a skull and spanners, which was produced by the brewery and clearly states the beer was brewed by Martin.

Parish council chairman and councillor Terry Marsden said: “We are very pleased that the public house has not been lost and it’s being continued to be run by local people from the village.

“We are extremely pleased; it was going for auction so it could have gone for housing.”
