Great Newsome Brewery looks to double production
Great Newsome Brewery has submitted plans to East Riding of Yorkshire Council to expand the size of its site at South Frodingham in Holderness.
The brewer, which exports to Italy and the Falkland islands and supplies JD Wetherspoons, Punch Taverns and Molson Coors on promotions, as well as large number of pubs across Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire, hopes to convert a 500sq m former farm building into a dedicated brewhouse, cold store and raw material storage unit in the autumn.
If approved, the plans would enable the family-run fourth generation business to boost ale production from 60 brewers barrels (36 gallons per barrel) per week to 120 and recruit two additional staff members bringing the total number of employees to 11.

Director Matthew Hodgson told The Morning Advertiser that he hoped the work would be completed by the first quarter of 2018. He described the beer, which is made using malt from barley grown on the family's farm, as ‘very drinkable’.
“Over recent years the farm has increased the area of malting barley it has grown due to advances in barley growing technology, which helps what was once a difficult crop to grow much easier,” he said.
Classic artisanal beers
“Adding value to this crop has been possible in the last couple of years by the investment in both bulk storage and an onsite malt mill.”
Hodgson added that the secret of the brewery’s success was remaining focused on producing classic artisanal beers.
“By remaining true to our roots and acknowledging our strengths, we have retained and grown our share in an increasingly crowded market, which has now become dominated by brands taking inspiration from alternative culture,” he said.
Commemorative ale
“People will come back to them time and time again,” he added. “We are 100% committed to quality, sustainability and longevity.”
Currently celebrating its 10th anniversary, the brewer has also created a commemorative ale called Jem's 10, named after the family's former springer spaniel, which features on the company logo.
