Bedfordshire-based Charles Wells has won a national award for its licensee recruitment programme.

The pub company scooped the Best Recruitment Initiative at the Springboard Awards for Excellence, which honours the best companies in the hospitality, leisure and tourism sector.

Judges praised Charles Wells for adopting a “variety of approaches to reduce churn” and for looking after existing employees.

Its recruitment activity included using existing licensees in advertising campaigns as case studies and an on-going feedback campaign from licensees to guide policy decisions.

It has also established a mentoring scheme where 10 licensees host prospective tenants to help them decide whether a pub tenancy is right for them.

Charles Wells Pub Company managing director Peter Wells said: “Our award submission focused on the help existing licensees give us to attract new people to run one of our pubs.

“They’re the ones who know what will be expected of new recruits and can speak honestly about what it’s like to run a Charles Wells brewery pub.

“We’re grateful for the help they’ve provided in this area and believe it’s indicative of the close working relationship we develop with our licensee customers.”
