Top Young's gastropub the Ship at Wandsworth is hosting a contest to find out the pub that makes the best Scotch egg in London.

At last count, 22 entrants had been confirmed, including the Drapers Arms in Islington, the Devonshire Arms in Chiswick and the Bull and Last at Highgate.

The pubs must submit one egg to enter and a batch on 10 or more on the night of the challenge (9 August). The egg in the challenge must be the one on the particpants' menus.

Condiments will be supplied but not included in judging, which will consider smell, taste, texture and appearance with a maximum of five marks for each.

Judges will include "Scotch Eggspert" David Constable, MiMi Aye of Meemalee's Kitchen, MasterChef winner 2009 and chef patron of the Wild Garlic Mat Follas and London food blogger Chris Pople. A celebrity panellist will be disclosed on the night.

Everyone is welcome to go along and spectate. Spread the word on Twitter using #ScotchEggChallenge and nominate your favourite pub by tweeting at @ShipWandsworth .
