All hail the pub food classics

The classics never die. A sweeping statement that may be, but it seems to hold water. Take music, for example — the Beatles are as popular as ever and still hold several music industry records, while ABBA’s hits were incorporated into the film Mamma Mia! not so long ago.

Take fashion — there’s still the LBD (little black dress) and three-piece suit, thankfully minus flared trousers.

This was our thinking in putting together the National Pub Food Challenge , new to 2013, which has followed on from the Great British Pub Food Awards.

In every survey and poll undertaken, fish and chips, burgers, pies and so on consistently steal the limelight with seemingly unshakeable popularity among diners.

We wanted to reward the pubs that put together the best offer for each dish and really celebrate the old favourites.

The standard of entries was extremely high, so congratulations to our 27 finalists. Now it is up to us and our guest judges to travel around the country and taste the best of
the classics.

It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it.
