A new survey has named the British public’s favourite dishes.

Research by Sykes Cottages placed fish and chips unchallenged in the top spot, with traditional favourites the roast dinner and full English breakfast following respectively behind.

Pub classics such as ham, egg and chips; a ploughman's lunch and scampi as well as regional favourites such as haggis, Cornish fudge and Irish stew also made the cut.

Fish & Chips

Tom Lowes, marketing manager at Sykes Cottages, said: “Over the years the nation’s tastes have become increasingly international when it comes to food. But we Brits are undoubtable spoilt when it comes to great local cuisine and the results are proof that we still get excited by it.

“The top three are firm British favourites but the list demonstrates that regional delicacies whet the nation’s appetite too.”

World leader?

Out of the 2,000 Brits polled, 43% said British cuisine was the best in the world, with the West Country deemed to have the best regional cuisine.

National beverage

Tea was given a majority vote as the nation’s top drink.

Of those surveyed, 13% said a pint of real ale was the nation’s best and one in ten said a tall glass of Pimms would be their British classic drink of choice.
