As May 7 approaches, operators are doing their bit to cash in on the event with a variety of election-themed menus and food promotions.

Party menu

At Upham Group site the Winning Post in Winkfield, Berkshire, diners were given the option of choosing from four menus themed around political parties during the week of 27 April – 1 May.

The site’s Labour menu featured Tony eggs ‘Benedict’, red snapper with Milibeans and Shiitake mushrooms and Gordon Brown chocolate recession with red strawberries.

The UKIP menu included heavily smoked salmon, beer batter far ‘aged fish with chips (not French fries) and white chocolate pudding.

The Conservative offer featured ‘coalition’ hash with Eric Pickles, Fib-eye steak with triple cooked lies and a range of whiff-whaff sauces and Eton mess.

Finally, the Liberal Democrat themed menu includes a ‘sitting on the fence’ onion soup, ham, Clegg and chips and spotted dick pudding.

The pub also provided a ‘coalition’ option; any starter, main and pudding from any of the four menus with two courses for £17 and three for £22.

Gregory Loison, general manager at the Winning Post, said: “A lot of customers are talking about the election and I thought we should make a bit of fun of it.

“I have one customer who works for various MPs in the London area – last week he told me that if I went and helped him to put some leaflets through the doors in Enfield he would arrange for me to meet Boris Johnson.

“So I did it and I met him – I gave [Johnson] the menu and – luckily - I think he only read the Labour section and had a bit of a giggle. So in terms of campaigning for my menu I think we’ve done pretty well.”

So far the coalition option has been a customer favourite, with steak and Eton mess particularly popular.

Loison added: “I just hope the fish and chips don’t win, that’s for sure.”

Milibacon

An ‘Election Section’ has been added to the menu at All Star Lanes sites, featuring ‘coalition’ fries and a choice between three dishes styled around the major party leaders.

The menu features a Milibacon burger; with bacon, lettuce and tomato, the Dave’s Dog; a mini hot dog with caramelised onions and the Clucking Clegg; a buttermilk fried chicken slider with creamed corn.

Christian Rose, managing director of All Star Lanes, said: “We like to cook up something a little different and we thought it would be fun to get on the campaign trail.

“Each of the three dishes has their own flavour and character and we are looking forward to diners electing their favourite which will then be scaled up to full size and offered on our menu.”

Difficult decision

At Columbo Group site the Cat and Mutton, in Dalston, London, members of the public have been asked to vote for either burgers or chicken wings, with the winning dish to be served free all evening on May 7.
