The owner of one of the country’s top gastropubs has announced plans to open a fourth site in Whitby.

Andrew Pern, owner of the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome, the Star Inn the City, York and the recently-opened Mr P’s Curious Tavern, also in York, will open new site The Star Inn the Harbour in 2017.

Pern said: “Opening a place in my home town has always been something that I’ve thought would happen one day.

“I have always championed all that’s great and good about Yorkshire, at my restaurants and even on television, such as when I represented the North East in the BBC Great British Menu.”

Seafood

The menu at the new site will focus on utilising local seafood and game and feature dishes such as melting potted shrimps and marsh samphire; Whitby crab stick with crab and avocado ice cream; and ‘rockpool’ of North Sea shellfish.

“The North Sea is a massive part of my kitchen larder – the quality of the fish and shellfish is the envy of the world. At Whitby it will literally be on my doorstep,” he added.

Pern plans to work with Yorkshire Coast College, offering job opportunities and possible apprenticeships to its students as part of his ongoing policy of employing local staff wherever possible.

“Locals help to give my restaurants their links with the community and of course, their individual character and I like to think that the restaurant will truly reflect its location in this very special part of Yorkshire,” he finished.

Impressed

Cllr Derek Bastiman, leader of Scarborough Borough Council, said he and his colleagues had been “extremely impressed” by Pern and business partner Mike Green’s proposals for the site.

He said: “It stood out way above the others in terms of matching our vision for investment from a high quality business that will bring new jobs and economic growth to Whitby as well as enhancing the town’s reputation for excellent cuisine in wonderful surroundings.”

The Star Inn at Harome is currently third in the UK’s Top 50 Gastropubs. Pern recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special, one-off tasting menu.

2017’s Top 50 Gastropubs will be announced in January. To find out more or enter for the event’s special award categories, click here.
