A pub has slammed one customer’s review on TripAdvisor, which criticised its staff, toilets and interior design, calling their comments ‘unscrupulous untruths’.

The Peacock in Bakewell, Derbyshire, hit back at the user’s complaints. Under the user name Staffsfamily, the review described the pub's décor as ‘dark and uninviting’, claimed that the toilets were ‘not nice’ and alleged that staff were eating chips which, it said wasn’t very welcoming.

The pub replied on the review site, stating that it respects anyone posting on TripAdvisor if the comments inform the reader of the truth.

It said: “What we don’t respect is when the post is littered with unscrupulous untruths as in the case of your post.

“Let me clarify that your post condemning the ladies toilet is not only untruthful, but in a court of law, you would be laughed out of court."

An amazing untruth

It added: “The ladies toilets at the Peacock are spotless, immaculate even, and where you are coming from with your condemnation, I simply don’t understand.”

The pub also defended the claims staff were eating chips while working and said: “I carried out in-house investigations and no one, as you have reported, was eating chips on the bar – absolutely no one, so again you have posted an amazing untruth.”

The user’s review said: “The table was pushed up against the window seats and not much room, décor dark and uninviting.

“The hosts were eating a bowl of chips on the bar, not very welcoming and I decided to use the facilities.

“My mother always said you can judge an establishment by its toilets. On Friday lunchtime, before a busy weekend due, they should have been spotless."

The loos let them down

It added: “No, two toilets in the ladies would not flush, press flush buttons missing and not useable. Not nice, I didn’t even want to put my bag on the floor.”

“I went back to the table where my companions were still sitting. We didn’t wait, we just said thank you but we would leave it.

“Unfortunately, the loos let them down and basic hygiene was lacking. Not our sort of place and I wouldn’t recommend or go there again.

“I don’t think eating chips behind the bar gives a good impression and our welcome wasn’t very warm.”
