A record number of Streatham-based pubs have signed up to a five-day food festival to showcase the eclectic cuisine in the district.

The Railway, the Manor Arms, Pratts & Payne, the Holland Tringham, the White Lion, the Horse & Groom and the Mere Scribbler will form part of 35 hospitality businesses taking part in the event, which runs between 22 and 25 June.

Mini plates including vegan sweet potato & chickpea cake, Hereford mini beef burgers & spinach and squash & goats' cheese mini parcels will be among the dishes prepared by the Railway, Greyhound Lane, at a cost of £4 each. Meanwhile, the White Lion, Streatham High Road, is to feature world-food choices including ackee & salt fish, mini burgers & fries and jerk chicken individually priced at £5.

Menu choices

Mini beer-battered fish and chips, will be sold at the Manor Arms, Mitcham Lane, alongside a vegetarian pumpkin ravioli option (both at £4.95), and a bite-sized classic burger priced at £3.

Currently in its eighth year, the Streatham Food Festival will give visitors the chance to taste their away around the vicinity, scoring alehouses and restaurants as they go.

The event, which is being funded by InStreatham BID, a not-for-profit company created by local businesses, will also host a toddler tour on the afternoons of 22-23 June enabling attendees to test out the children’s menus at family-friendly venues.

InStreatham BID chairman Oli Osibo described the festival as a "real opportunity to shine a light on the night-time economy in Streatham".

Showcasing summer menu

“We have one of the most exciting restaurant scenes in the capital and The Streatham Food Tour and The Toddler Tour both give us the opportunity to show these off to both residents and visitors to the area,” he said.

Sarah Wall, CEO of the Livelyhood group, which owns the Mere Scribbler, added: “We’re thrilled to be taking part in the Streatham Food Festival in our first year in Streatham.

"It’s a great way to showcase our summer menu, full of delicious flavour and locally sourced produce, to the locals and visitors alike.

"The festival is a brilliant showcase of the fantastic community and flavours of Streatham. We’re hoping the sun will be shining for festival goers and also so we can make the most of our wicked garden too.”
