VIDEO: John Calton of the Staith House talks Top 50 Gastropubs

John Calton, chef patron of North Shields gastropub the Staith House, was named Gastropub Chef of the Year at the Top 50 Gastropubs awards last month.

Calton, whose pub came 31st in the Top 50 list, and was also named Best Food Pub in 2015's Great British Pub Awards, said he was on 'cloud nine' after a year of accolades.

"What a phenomenal achievement to sit here in a room full of Michelin-starred chefs and they call out my name," he said.

After such a successful year, he and he team were considering expanding in the near future, he said.

"What we need to do it try and get one or two more chefs at the Staith House, make that more consistent and then try and get a second pub."

Top 50 Gastropubs is sponsored by Estrella Damm. The Gastropub Chef of the Year Award was sponsored by Nestlé Professional.
