A number of UK dining-led pubs with rooms have been shortlisted in this year’s international Smith Hotel Awards.

The Wheatsheaf Inn, in Northleach, Gloucestershire – owned by the Lucky Onion Group – has been nominated in the Best Boutique category, while the company’s No 131 restaurant and bar, based in Cheltenham, has made the Above and Beyond category.

The Pig near Bath has also been nominated in the Best Budget Boutique category, while fellow outlet the Pig on the Beach, in Studland, Dorset – which opened in June – has been nominated for Best Newcomer.

Known as the ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ awards, voting is open for the public across 12 different categories until 30 September. The 10 nominees in each category will then go on to face a board of specialist judges throughout October.

Judging checklist

The judging process to find out ‘what makes a Smith hotel?’ comprises a checklist of 24 questions, including is the setting sensational? Is there a ‘nothing’s-too-much-trouble’ attitude? And does it have that magical ambiance that’s so hard to put into words?

Other categories in the awards include Best Dressed Hotel, Hottest Hotel Bar and Best For Families.

The category winners, plus an overall Best Smith Hotel 2014 champion, will be announced at a ceremony in London on 6 November.
