A publican from South Devon has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest ever pool marathon, clocking up more than 100 hours of continuous play in four days.

Graham Cuthbert, tenant at the Ei Publican Partnerships-owned Bell Inn, Kingsteignton, and local customer Darren Stocks broke the record after playing for an impressive 106 hours.

The pair were provided with a set of official rules and guidelines from Guinness World Records, and advice on how to deal with sleep deprivation from Torbay Hospital.

The four-day challenge was filmed from start to finish with both players granted a five-minute break for every hour of play – with neither player getting any sleep during the event.

Guinness World Records confirmed the record after a 14-week verification process.

Exhausting and emotional

“It was a fantastic experience, not to mention exhausting and emotional,” said Cuthbert. “I don’t know what we would have done without the support of the community, they really kept us going, especially towards the end."

The event raised more than £7,000 for Rowcroft Hospice, a charity close to Cuthbert’s heart. Rowcroft Hospice provides comfort, support and specialist care to more than 2,200 patients and their loved ones across south Devon.

Ei Publican Partnerships regional manager Jim Pope added: “A huge congratulations to both Graham and Darren, not only on breaking a brand-new Guinness World Record, but the money they’ve raised truly demonstrates their commitment to the community”.
