Must make things easy for the Smoking Police. If they see a busy pub they KNOW they must be flouting the ban.

OK Guys, I have had enough. The Mandela Freedom Smoking (bed)Room opens on Friday next.  Anyone else joining me? I will not stand by and see my loyal customers huddled in the rain because of a nanny state. Nick and Tony were right all along. We will not be breaking the law so why Pis* about arguing with the ashites and cowering. Let's go for it.

Hi Al,  The philosophy is simple. We are autonomous individuals with negative freedom to be left alone. We are not cogs in a state machine. There is no such thing as society unless we say so and laws have no special status beyond the empirical fact that they are backed by the coercive power of the state unless we embrace them. We have no moral duty to obey them any more than a concentration camp guard had a moral duty to the fuhrer. If you are really interested in philosophy check out Ted Honderich on the subject. Why do you say 'customers will tire of fixed penalties' rather than 'customers will choose a smokefree environment'? Nobody ever said it was wrong to have a smokefree pub, restaurant or brothel if you prefer that kind of thing. Why do you presume to tell others what they may or may not do?

Stefan, many pro choicers on this site have warned for some years now that if a smoking ban was not blocked that it would lead to an ever accellerating flow of other restrictive legislation headed by anti alcohol and also "unhealthy" food.

This is indeed happening with new targets for control and banning being muted every day.

The reference to coffee was to illustrate that onece this avalanche starts in earnest nothing will be safe from banning because someone thinks it should be.

It is all about control of the population by government. Always has been but so many people are at each othere throats emotionally they don't see that their freedoms are being drained away to leave us in a totallitarian police state.

That is what is at stake not smelly smoke on your clothes.

The final nail in the coffin of freedom in this nation will be the imposition of the national ID card.

It may already be too late.

It is also worth noting that some one who consumes 3 cups of coffee a day has an elevated risk of 2.5 of catching cancer. Compare that with ETS at 1.25 then we can see coffee could be on the agenda next.. Put in percentage terms ETS is 25%, coffee is a wacking 150%.
